The Blue Book Collection
Marker and pen. Completed in 2023.
The Blue Book Collection challenged me to leave my inspiration up to chance. I’m often intimidated by the blank page- the endless possibilities can easily result in creative paralysis. Giving myself themes and constraints to work under can help me navigate this, so for the Blue Book I started every entry with three randomly generated colors. These colors would inspire the topic, and fun facts about that animal inspired my designs.
This was my first real practice in overall page design- balancing different angles of character drawings with text and color, which I intend to explore further in the future with comic series. It was also one of my first ventures into coloring with markers- the first few pages in this book were colored with highlighters. A good friend gifted me my first set of legitimate alcohol markers, kicking off what I’m sure my bank account fears will be a lifelong addiction.
Thanks, Elias.
In hindsight I wish I hadn’t used a lined book for this series- I found out later that this would be a massive pain during scanning and preparation of these designs for merchandise. But hey, you live and you learn.
